Investigators originally said an officer tried to stop the vehicle because it was believed to be stolen. No charges have been filed for the driver or injured passenger.
A passenger was shot in the shoulder after a San Diego police officer opened fire during a stolen car investigation in San Ysidro. NBC 7’s Jeanette Quezada reports.
Law enforcement did not make any arrests in a suspected stolen car investigation last month, which led to shots fired by an officer in a San Ysidro neighborhood, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said Monday.
The incident began on July 29 around 7 a.m. when San Diego police spotted a vehicle they believed to be stolen driving around an apartment complex near Del Sur and Beyer boulevards, said the Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the use-of-force case.
Inside the vehicle was a driver and passenger. In an original news release, SDSO said officers attempted to pull the vehicle over but the driver did not stop. Instead, the vehicle advanced toward the officer.
One officer, identified Monday as 8-year-veteran Officer Ricardo Zambrano, discharged his weapon and struck the passenger, SDSO said. The passenger was hospitalized and was expected to survive. The officer was not injured.

While the driver was originally detained, the individual was not arrested. Neither was the injured passenger.
The Sheriff’s Department said they are still reviewing the incident.
